Here's a few updates about some bits & bobs that I've been involved with in the last couple of months ......

Spring 2014 News

Hey folks !

Here's a few updates about some bits & bobs that I've been involved with in the last couple of months ......

Current projects in progress or recently completed include; recording & mixing new songs in Lisbon for the new PANDA BEAR LP, Recording an LP of collaborative material with Los Angeles' PEAKING LIGHTS for mixing this summer, recording and mixing a new LP of sequencer driven groove wonders from Memphis's CLOUDLAND CANYON and a forthcoming LP session with Brooklyn/Basque based brother & sister duo DUAL SPLIT - featuring Maia Ibar (ex TEEN).

ALSO , Recent mastering projects I've had the pleasure to be involved in include - the New LP from WALLS & DAPHNE ORAM entitled Soundhouses after FRANCIS BACON's proto sc-fi masterpiece 'The New Atlantis', out on ECSTATIC records in May, a rarely heard 13th FLOOR ELEVATORS live show from '67 due later in the year and the forthcoming debut DEPARTURE LP from USA's THE VACANT LOTS, released on London's Sonic Cathedral records in late spring.

GI Zippo lighters from the Vietnam War era.

By Ivan Liechti / Text by Sonic Boom

Ivan Liechti collects pictures of engraved GI Zippos from the Vietnam War era. In this issue, he presents a collection of those artworks, redrawn and transferred onto paper in order to preserve their rather crude original appearance. The work represents a kind of modern day epigraphy.

I wrote a short essay about the phenomena adding - copies are still available.

MAPS

MAPS, is a collaboration across three countries, two time zones and a thousand paths; England, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Points beyond. Points between. Sonic Boom and Sinner DC joined forces to produce an audio and visual experience, with Dutch artist Roland van der Velden creating the animated imagery by perverting and rewriting computer code from a long forgotten '80s video game - somehow, like mercury, the parts combine to present a reflection of the collaborators influences and styles and purpose.

The live show has been performed in Switzerland in Paris and there are plans afoot for an album release with accompanying visuals on DVD.

SPACELINES 2

New Atlantis Summer 2012 News

Here's some upcoming outgoing things you might enjoy.

First up are the new digital singles and videos by Brooklyn girl group TEEN. Taken from their debut release 'In Limbo' on Car Park records, which was out on 28 August. Recorded and mixed over the last 12 months by Sonic Boom and TEEN, the LP is already garnering high praise for the bands sublime vocals and tribal attitudes.

Lookee here for the bands super cool mix tape plus (you'll see what the plus is when u check it out)

Also their first two video singles

Better

Electric

The album is available on vinyl, plus the other usual formats... http://www.insound.com/In-Limbo-Vinyl-LP-TEEN/P/INS109344/

Hot on its heels, recorded and mixed by Nick Kramer & Sonic Boom at MGMT's Blanker Unsinn studio is the new video , single and Lp from New York state country boy CHEVAL SOMBRE on Sonic cathedral records, due for release 5 November.

The record features Sonic accompanying Cheval Sombre on the 11 tracks along with members of MGMT, Dean Wareham, Britta Phillips and other guests also round out a classic follow up to his eponymous first Lp.

Check out his new video for the recently released single Couldn't Do: http://vimeo.com/41831203

On the 7" vinyl front, look out for the super limited Sun Araw / Spacemen 3 disc on split coloured vinyl and op art sleeve. Unreleased tracks include the rare vocal version of 'That's just fine' and the unreleased Sun Araw jam 'I'm gonna cross that river of Jordan'.

New Atlantis Summer 2011 News

Just a quick heads up regarding what's going on this summer / fall in the general sphere round about here ....

Sun Araw

A couple of new releases of some eminent bits & blobs Those wanting the latest & greatest in space dub can find SUN ARAW's Ancient Romans double lp on marble white vinyl and with a beautiful colour insert booklet, and accompanying CD via Drag City -cat:- SUN ARK records 012. Mastered by Sonic Boom.

Red Crayola Sonic Boom remasters

Also just on release and re-mastered by sonic boom are the long awaited Charly records releases from the legendary Texas uber-psyche pioneers The RED CRAYOLA.

2 CD releases - one featuring both the STEREO and the MONO mixes of the legendary The Parable of Arable Land lp plus the rare 'Epitaph for a legend' demos (including the Transparent Radiation version covered by Spacemen 3) and the unrecognised and unrecognised visionary 2nd lp - God Bless The Red Crayola And All Who Sail With Her. Mastered properly & sympathetically for the first time, and replacing previous re-pressing from poor vinyl copies, 'God Bless' reveals itself to be one of the most important records of its decade & time.

Peter Zinovieff 3 CD set

Also on that visionary note comes the long awaited 3 cd set from EMS synthi pioneer Peter Zinovieff. Zinovieff's work - previously unreleased and unknown outside a hipster cognoscenti since the works inception in the early 60s - remains a long lost key-stone in the history of electronic and computer music and composition. His pioneering work in the field, both solo and collaborative with the likes of Delia Derbyshire, Alan Sutcliffe (author of the 'Like..' programme used as a banner on the Sonic Boom site), Hans Werner Henze & Sir Harrison Birtwistle are collected here for the first time and reveal why both the Beatles, Stockhausen and Pink Floyd were at the front of the queue to buy his products and engage his verve.

Including a 60+ page booklet, Peter Zinovieff - Electronic Calendar should be with us from Space Age recordings around December.

Panda Bear + Sonic Boom

Also due for release round December is the 4 LP box of Panda Bear's Tomboy lp.

The Special edition, strictly limited to 5000 copies and released on Animal Collective's Paw Tracks imprint , features 4 vinyl discs with duplicate digital download.

The expanded set features expanded 16 page booklet and packaging by nyc artist & former Panda Bear musical collaborator Scott Mou , leads in with hi-fi mixes of all of the Tomboy songs spread across two 33 rpm 12". The new version also feature a bonus 12th track - The Preakness - an out-take from the LP sessions mixed by sonic boom for the set.

LP 3 of the set ,features Panda Bear's original (and now rare) single mixes as well as his unheard demo mixes of the non single Tomboy songs - leaving LP 4 to round out the whole kaboodle with five each of instrumentral and acapella mixes from the LP.

OCTOBER UPDATE

Morning !

It's been a while, I know. Things are crazy in general & generally crazy. We've made a mad pledge to try & cover the spaces and reach out to the places. There's a bunch of stuff going on - Cheval Sombre's new LP is in the finishing by spring - in time for the swallows return, at the least.

From Spectrum - some new records, some great shows (ATP in April with Animal Collective, Austin Psyche fest a-beckoning....), re-issues of the 1st 3 Sonic Boom/Spectrum discs....... starting with 'Sonic Boom Spectrum' on Space Age Records in March.

But .... Right now, just to remind you of these shows coming up in the next couple of weeks, here's our last shows of the year. If you want to be sure of tickets in Paris, Zurich or Basel and the two festivals, now's the time I guess.

See you on someday

Pete x

SUMMER UPDATE

Spacemen3 , MGMT ,Cheval Sombre & D&B

Current mood: hazy

Just a few lines to catch up on stuff . Of note since the last tour ended in the US:

Over the last 2 months I've been co-producing the new lp with MGMT in california & brooklyn , due out in 2009.

May saw the release of Cheval Sombre's sleepy just -in-time-for-summer self titled lp on NY's Double Feature records , produced by myself & featuring Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips .

Also of note -the release of Dean & Britta's sublime soundtracking of 13 of Warhol's infamous 'screen-tests ' . Lou Reed ,Nico ,Edie Sedgwick ,Billy Name , Dennis Hopper & 8 others get brand new sound tracks to stunning effect . Included are a song co-written by myself (teenage lightning (and lonely highways) , and an instrumental reworking of 'if I should die' from the sonic boom / spectrum l.p. , and my remix of 'knives from Bavaria' from the sonic souvenirs e.p.

the only confirmed shows we have for the upcoming months revolve around Dockville festival in Hamburg mid August (w MGMT) , Tanned Tin festival in November in Spain & the December MBV curated All Tommorrows parties . More info on the shows as & when .

Discwise , the vinyl Spacemen 3 e.p. of 'these blues' et al is in the stores now on clear vinyl 12" with a spot varnished acid-tab sleeve .

The vinyl for War Sucks has been held up due to label illness & manufacturing problems . The cd's are set to dissapear fairly soon . fair warning . these Mind Expansion releases are'nt planned to be kept in print indefinately. more info as & when ,
have a good summer

APRIL 2009: WAR SUCKS - NEW E.P

The new 4 track EP from SPECTRUM titled WAR SUCKS is due for release on Mind Expansion records on April 23rd in both 12inch colored vinyl & C.D. formats with free download.

The EP features two covers - Sonic's re-worked version of the Red Crayola classic WAR SUCKS, and Laurie Anderson's overlooked gem WALKING & FALLING, plus two originals OVER & OVER and RAZZLE DAZZLE MIND.

Between the four tracks it covers the whole gamut of SPECTRUM's unique & influential take on Pop, Psychedelia, Rock & Experimental formats. Known for pushing the boundaries with experimental music whilst also writing pop-styled classics such as How You Satisfy Me and highly charged songs like Revolution, the EP draws together the best of SPECTRUM's material hinting at the variety of songs that will feature on the album due for release later in the year.

WAR SUCKS sees the band psychedelically stormtroop through the Red Crayola classic accompanied by nebelwerfer strains - a kind of 'Stalin organ' used in WW2 by the Germans to invoke as much chaos, noise and fear as possible blended with the overhead scream of a Stuka dive-bomber. The combination of the over-driven guitar sound, crashing cymbals and apocalyptic vocal with these screaming sound effects makes for a unique & compelling sound experience.

RAZZLE DAZZLE MIND finds the band on instrumental form with this classic Stooges meets Stereolab track - a vocal version is expected for the new l.p.

WALKING & FALLING is an inspired cover of Laurie Anderson's spoken word piece from 1980, taking the track to a stunning conclusion only hinted at in the original. Intense delay feedback melding with Sonic's trademark Vox repeater tone creates atmosphere in this sensitive and pulsing track.

It seamlessly segues into the final track, a Spectrum original OVER & OVER - highly reminiscent of Playing With Fire era SPACEMEN 3 and at least the equal to songs such as 'Let me down gently' & 'How does it feel'.

Strikingly sleeved in collaboration with Swiss artist Ivan Liechti from the design studio DIY (http://www.diy.li) it features psychedelic, candy-coloured artwork based on the unusual zig-zag 'Razzle-Dazzle' deception camouflage used in WW1 and WW2.

The vinyl comes in custom pressed blended colors with matching sleeve artwork.

The EP will be out on Mind Expansion records http://www.myspace.com/mindexpansionrecords

European Tour dates - November 2008

Hey folks,

just a few lines to let everyone know what's happening for SPECTRUM in the coming weeks & to thank all the folks who applied for the percussion & lead guitar posts. I was gratified to see such consistent quality amongst all those who applied.

I am pleased to announce that ALL UK SHOWS WILL FEATURE THE FULL BAND - performing an extended version of the set featured at the 4 M.B.V. shows we played last year. Expect the full breadth of SPECTRUM's & SPACEMEN 3's catalogue including Suicide, Revolution, How You Satisfy Me, Mary, Transparent Radiation etc.

The current financial climate is scaring some of the promoters of gigs to death & if you want to guarantee your local show takes place, please buy tickets in advance as soon as possible. Most shows are in fairly intimate venues & sell out on the night is possible. It's been a long time since I played many of these cities - please let your circle of friends know & pass the info on where you see fit. The current shows & online ticket addresses are:

Fri 13th Feb - The Static Gallery, LIVERPOOL www.ticketline.co.uk
Sat 14th Feb, The Library, LEEDS www.ticketline.co.uk
Tuesday 17th Feb - The Social, NOTTINGHAM - www.alt-tickets.co.uk

US Tour dates 2008

Hey folks,
We're just embarking on our full SPECTRUM band tour, reeling out old & new Spectrum stuff from the present 'Indian Giver' l.p back , as well as mining the SPACEMEN 3 catalogue for several old gem. Starting on the 20th sept in NYC with Dean&Britta and winding up in early October on the west coast. The tour is just a few larger cities with return on a larger scale planned for next year. The band is sounding pretty fucking stellar ..... & I'm looking forward to playing the stuff out again - audiences so far seem to agree.
Our recent shows with MBV & at Sonic Cathedral were great and we're rolling out after these U.S. shows to Paris, Copenhagen, Berlin & all over central Europe in November before some December shows in Blighty.

Other bits of interest : CHEVAL SOMBRE - the NY state singer has released two new 7"s , also available as a 7" clear vinyl lathe cut double pack - all out on Static Caravan & selling out at a rate of knots. It's produced by & featuring myself - Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips (Galaxie 500, Luna etc. ) also both get deep & moody on various Cheval 'cuts'.
A full lp is out on Dean Wareham's brand new label DoubleFeature next year recorded by Nick Kramer & myself in New Jersey in the last couple of years . I obviously heartily recommend it - some folk say he has the vibe/sound similar to Jason's earlier Spacemen 3 stuff. Reviews so far have been fairly ecstatic at this sleepy, drowsy & soothingly poetic maiden voyage. Engineer Nick Kramer worked with me on the Dean&Britta 'sonic souvenirs' remixes, part of which also sees re-issue as extra tracks on the new re-release of their bench mark deleted debut l.p. L'Avventura - also on their own DoubleFeature imprint.

Spectrum will also be doing t-shirts & hopefully some merch on the road. Please come & say hi at the shows.
Till soon
Sonic

New Atlantis Studios, December 2007

Hiya Everyone,

I'm just tying up the final dates for some U.S. SPECTRUM shows starting late January in NYC & including the Melodica festival in Texas (some of you will have seen or heard about this legendary festival) & dates including Seattle, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin & Portland. Anyone still looking to book shows please contact littlemissmanagement@hotmail.co.uk or sonic@sonic-boom.info for details.

Finally there's a new SPECTRUM vs JIM DICKINSON lp out early next year in Febuary on Birdman Records entitled 'Spectrum meets Cpt. Memphis - Indian Givers'. It's a really nice record featuring collaborations in songwriting & recording with the meta-legenday Jim Dickinson, known for his astounding work with Ry Cooder (Paris Texas + others), Dylan (1990s), the Stones (Wild Horses), Aretha Franklin (1970s), Big Star (Like Flies on Sherbet), The Cramps (Red Headed Woman) as well as his many incarnations from The Jesters (legendary SUN Records artistes) thru to his current mesmerising Mudboy & the Neutrons (known felons in drag ) band & Cpt. Memphis solo persona.

Tracks include a re-recording of 'Amen', 'Take your Time' & 'When Tommorrow Hits', new Spectrum song 'Mary', collaborations 'The Lonesome death of 'Johnny Ace' (an astounding song about the late Johnny Ace, a 50s r&b crooner who blew his brains out playing "gun games" backstage between 2 shows on Xmas day at the famous Mitchell Hotel & whorehouse in Memphis... stories dont get much better than this), 'Confederate Dead' and some new fantastic Jim Dickinson songs in 'till your mainline comes' & 'the old cow died'. The sessions were recorded around 3 years ago at Jim's studio in the Mississipi mud lands surrounding the river Mississipi, just south of the Tennesee border.

The lp features Randall Nieman of Spectrum & Fuxa and Jimmy Crosthwait from Mudboy & the Neutrons and on Jim's classic 1972 release 'Dixie Fried'.

Please note this is not the SPECTRUM lp that has been in the works ready for release next year. The release of that l.p. will be preceded by a new SPECTRUM EP "Walking & Falling" in March on Mind Expansion records.

Bestest,
Sonic
